About
Dr. Amanda
Dr. Amanda has extensive experience teaching English language arts and literature for over twenty years in a highly reputable private K-12 school in New Jersey. She has also taught courses in humanities, including general studies, writing, religion, and history at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as an adjunct professor and as an interim professor. She has tutored privately with students in grade 5 through high school and with adult ESL learners.
Dr. Amanda began her college studies at Duke University where she earned a BA in psychology and in religion (double major) and an M Div. After earning a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary, she taught college and graduate level courses at Rutgers, Drew, and Kean Universities, and elsewhere. The courses ranged from writing, religion, and core humanities courses for undergraduates to postgraduate level seminar and lecture courses. It was ultimately her love of language and writing instruction that drew her to teaching English full time.
Dr. Amanda finds it especially rewarding to confer with students one-on-one to help them find their voices as writers and express their ideas coherently and effectively for their chosen audience. Using mentor texts, she helps students identify the form, style, and purpose of a given genre and to apply this knowledge in their own writing. She believes in the importance of a strong grammar foundation, and through years of teaching, she has developed strategies for incorporating grammar instruction into the writing context. A published poet and writer, Dr. Amanda holds to a growth mindset as she continues to develop her own style. She is conversant with literature for children, young adults, and adult readers, and she incorporates strategies for building comprehension, fostering analytical skills, and developing English vocabulary into her reading instruction.
